PH, Japan solidify defense ties at ADMM-Plus

November 22, 2024 (Vientiane, Lao PDR) – Philippine Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro, Jr. met with Japan Minister of Defense Nakatani Gen on the sidelines of the 18th ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and 11th ADMM Plus on Friday, reinforcing the strong and growing partnership between the two nations.

Minister Nakatani extended his condolences to the Philippines following the recent typhoons that impacted the country, expressing solidarity and support. He also conveyed confidence that under Secretary Teodoro’s leadership, the relationship between Japan and the Philippines will remain robust and enduring.

Secretary Teodoro expressed gratitude for Japan’s assistance during the typhoon response and highlighted the value of ongoing collaborations. He noted that Japan and the Philippines share mutual interests in promoting regional stability, and emphasized the importance of synchronized communication in making strong and unified statements against actions that undermine peace and stability.

The Philippine Defense Chief congratulated Minister Nakatani on his reappointment as Japan’s Defense Minister.

“Japan remains a vital bedrock for stability, peace, and security in the ASEAN region,” Secretary Teodoro remarked, expressing optimism about further cooperation under Minister Nakatani’s leadership.

During the meeting, Secretary Teodoro pushed for deeper defense industry collaboration, including joint production and technology transfers, following the recent signing of the Self-Reliant Defense Posture Revitalization Act.

Secretary Teodoro also welcomed working with Japan alongside other like-minded partners, underscoring the shared commitment to peace and security. He invited Minister Nakatani to visit the Philippines next year, further solidifying the strong partnership between the two nations.
